It doesn't print colour photos like inkjets, but for my needs it's more than perfect. The consumables are not exactly cheap. But the colour toner cartridges are separate and each costs $70, so if I need to change all of them at the same time, it would be $280 plus taxes. The cartridges are rated for 5000 pages. With my kind of printing they should last even more than that. And that beats the cost of the consumables for most inkjets. I usually stay away from multi-function devices. I've seen way too many where one of the functions dies and then you'd have a big honking thing that does one or two things at best. Thank you for the advice.

I've had dozens of different types of b&w and color laser printers over the years, and the Brother machines have always been inexpensive to operate and very Mac friendly. Before you choose any machine, look at the price of the consumables. It's also nice to have a machine where the drum and toner cartridge are not bundled together, since they usually don't wear out at the same time. I’d go for a Brother MFC. They come std with 64MB but take up to 512MB, have 1 2 3 or 4 input trays (up to 1500 sheets for tray 3), optional stacker/stapler, optional base cupboard & castors, and have great PS emulation (I proof FrameMaker and InDesign pubs on it) and have a 200,000 / month duty cycle. The standard EIO card is 10/100 ethernet. I have bought 3 x 4300dtn's, all second-hand (ex govt contracts) and the base price was $A650.
