I have problem making php up and running.

I tried the command "curl -I "http://localhost/~macbookpro/info.php"

I get this results:
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Sat, 28 Jun 2008 12:56:15 GMT
Server: Apache/2.2.8 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.8 OpenSSL/0.9.7l DAV/2 PHP/5.2.5 Phusion_Passenger/2.0.1
X-Powered-By: PHP/5.2.5
Content-Type: text/html

But, if i run "curl -G "http://localhost/~macbookpro/info.php"

I get this:

<b>Parse error</b>: syntax error, unexpected '?' in <b>/Users/macbookpro/Sites/info.php</b> on line <b>1</b>

Anyone can help me? Thank you.

Thank you for the advice.

A month ago I purchased a Brother 4070CDW, color laser with duplex printing. It was on special at Costco for $550 Canadian. So far I'm happy with it. It doesn't print colour photos like inkjets, but for my needs it's more than perfect.

The consumables are not exactly cheap. But the colour toner cartridges are separate and each costs $70, so if I need to change all of them at the same time, it would be $280 plus taxes. The cartridges are rated for 5000 pages. With my kind of printing they should last even more than that. And that beats the cost of the consumables for most inkjets.

I usually stay away from multi-function devices. I've seen way too many where one of the functions dies and then you'd have a big honking thing that does one or two things at best.

I'd go for a Brother MFC. I've had dozens of different types of b&w and color laser printers over the years, and the Brother machines have always been inexpensive to operate and very Mac friendly. Before you choose any machine, look at the price of the consumables. It's also nice to have a machine where the drum and toner cartridge are not bundled together, since they usually don't wear out at the same time.

Adding my thanks, especially for the MySQL socket as I hadn't seen that part elsewhere and was baffled!

One hint if the virtual hosts aren't working - in my old httpd.conf file I had just used * for the port instead of *:80. When I changed the port # in the entries it worked:

[VirtualHost *:80]
ServerName my.virtual.site
DocumentRoot "/some/other/path"
[/VirtualHost]

Also originally I did not have the DocumentRoot value in double quotes but adding the quotes did not make things work any better.

1. Yes
2. It's all about the almighty dollar (i.e., to protect their market)
3. No, your article is spot on
4. MS will follow the money. If they think they can make more by crippling the Mac version so as to keep people on Windows, they will. If they think they can make more by offering parity, they will. You say there is competition; however, at the level they are playing, there is none. Large corporations are a very conservative lot; you're not going to see them moving away from Office anytime soon unless something major happens (e.g., Office security problems cause a few high profile companies to lose millions).

Let me join in the chorus of THANK YOUs. I've been to so many places that say 'just download this file and double-click and voila! you are running php & apache.' but after lots of frustration, php and apache still were not talking. Your instructions were clear and simple and they work. For the first time, running the phpinfo() command actually returned a response. Many many thanks!!

Thanks, Lazeez. I ended up doing something similar by creating an applet that scans the target folder and runs my desired applescript if anything is found. I set them to launch when the user logs in, so it works pretty well.

I'll check into "Lingon" also. It sounds like that'll be a good tool for the tool box.

I'd cross my fingers and toes to have this problem fixed. What a pain.

Yes, there is a workaround for the problem.

First save the AppleScript as an Application.

Second, use the program 'Lingon' to create a user launchd event that runs the script (saved as application) whenever the watched folder is modified.
Log out and log back in and it should work.

The launchd event works better than folder actions.

Although, crossing fingers, the soon-to-be-released update 10.5.3 would fix the problem.

DivX is not a standard. MPG4 (h264) used by the AppleTV and distributed by iTunes is an open standard. Open as in anybody can license it and implement it, just like MP3.

In order for Apple to implement Blu-ray playback on the Mac, they need to license and implement all the technology required by the Blu-ray format and they can only do it under the strict rules that those licenses attempt to enforce.

For example, in order to playback all blu-ray disks, Apple will have to license and implement the VC1 codec, which is basically Windows Media 9. If I were Apple, I would be very hesitant to do such a thing.

You think that having blu-ray playback won't affect anything on your system if you're not playing back a blu-ray disk? I guess you didn't know that in order to get the license, Apple is required to try to make sure that no software that can read the blu-ray disc and maybe rip it into a file (like handbrake) can run. So Mac OS X would need to play the role of the enforcer, even when Apple's DVD player software is not active.

For a Mac to be allowed to play blu-ray disc in full resolution, All the hardware needs to be certified by the blu-ray consortium, so you won't be able to play it on the current crop of Apple monitors, especially the 30" one. That monitor does not support encrypted signal.

Only the laptops and the iMac would possibly be able to play it because they're closed systems. Not the Mac Mini, and not the Mac Pro.

If you were Apple, would you take on something that you can't easily explain to your customers?

Picture this scenario: Apple announces Blu-ray playback capability in Mac OS X. A regular Joe has a Mac Mini hooked up to a 30" monitors. He goes out and gets an external Blu-ray player. He hooks it up and goes to play his blu-ray disc but gets a crappy picture (because Mac OS X would have to degrade his picture to standard resolution for lack of a fully encrypted chain). What do you think his reaction would be? Would he blame the people behind blu-ray for their stupid rules or would he blame Apple and thinks that the Mac sucks for this reason?

If you were Apple, would you put yourself in this position?

You are free to have your own opinion. And you can hope to get blu-ray on your system. I was only explaining why it may not happen anytime soon.

I strongly disagree. I very much want Blu-ray playback on my Mac, but there's currently no (legal) way to play HD on the Mac, despite the drives. 30" is plenty large enough if your not sitting across the room since it is >HD in resolution. Moreover, I don't want to be dependent on downloading some giant file for hours, using up my bandwidth, to get a video that is still much lower quality than Blu-ray (due to compression), and then be dependent on playing it on a device that doesn't even support DivX! No, getting Blu-ray discs is a heck of a lot cheaper, easier, and higher quality for most of us. While implementing Blu-ray playback may indeed be a pain for Apple and may be computationally demanding, it's not as if it will effect your everyday system performance in anyway when your not currently playing Blu-ray. No, I think Apple is just getting greedy about iTunes again, which will ultimate result in the AppleTV flopping again. The iPod only succeeded because it used open standards (mp3) and iTunes allowed ripping from the physical media (CDs), not because of downloading. If they want AppleTV to succeed, they need to use open standards again (DivX) and allow at least playing from the physical media (Blu-ray). Otherwise, people will buy the many Blu-ray-DivX combo devices.

Hi Dipesh. Got a MBP too running OS X 10.5.2 and the same problem as well. Here's the solution in four simple steps:

1.- download this
ftp://ftp.mysql.com/pub/mysql/download/gui-tools/MySQL.prefPane-leopardfix.zip
and replace the PefPane.

2.- Go to the Finder, press Command-Shift-G and type this:
/usr/local/
A window will open

3.- Find and copy the MySQLCOM directory to Library/StartupItems/. If you get any error, simply copy the MySQLCOM folder to our desktop and then to the StartupItems folder. You will have to enter your administrator pasword to allow the MySQLCOM folder to be copied onto the StsrtupItems folder. Don't worry, this is OK.

4.- Restart your Mac and enjoy MySQL.

Last night, I tried installing mySql, ver. 10.5 (5.0.51a (x86), on my MacBook Pro (unsuccessfully).

Prior to installing mySql, I enabled php as per the instructions on the top of the page. I then followed the advise about creating a php.ini copy and setting:

mysql.default_socket = /private/tmp/mysql.sock
mysqli.default_socket = /private/tmp/mysql.sock

Next, I installed mySql, however, I cannot seem to start mySql or set the password (as per post no. 7) as follows:

/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin -u root password

Can anyone help a poor sap like me out? Also, what directory is mySql installed to?

Thanks so much in advance!

Cheers,
Dipesh.

Thanks so much. I just tried to use my local development setup for the first time since upgrading to leopard and it was broken. Your instruction were so clear and it only took a few minutes to fix. I'm very grateful!
