It isn't lazy to want to maintain and build one set of code for multiple environments, it is smart.
Adobe isn't the one wanting universal control, that is all Apple all the time.

Apple seem to have forgotton where they come from.

I wonder what'd happen to their core set of users if Adobe uprooted and pulled all their products from the Mac platform (Photoshop, Acrobat, Pagemaker anyone?)

Not a great future for a company that had graphic design as it's niche.

<blockquote>
@Dave

I see Apple’s restriction like this: Someone asks you to write a paper but instructs you that you HAVE to use Microsoft Word to write the paper. Pages can produce the exact same document, but this person is convinced using anything except Word will create a “sub-standard” paper. Yes, app development is much more complex than a memo to a coworker, but the concept is just as ridiculous.

</blockquote>

Wrong analogy. Apple didn't ask or contract any developers to write stuff for the iphone/ipad. Developers want in on a lucrative business. It's like bidding on a contract with the government or a company. You want the contract, or you want the business, then you stick to certain guidelines. Apple isn't forcing anybody to write software for the iphone. If you want in, you play by the rules. It's Apple's platform, so it's Apple's rules. You don't like the rules, there are many more mobile platforms to write software for.

Remember the transition to the Intel architecture? Since 2003, Apple had been urging developers, including Adobe to use Apple's tools for development. Developers that had moved to XCode before 2005 needed only to check a box in XCode and recompile to have their applications run natively on the Intel Macs. Adobe and Microsoft, because of their use of their own tools and others that were using the Code Warrior tools, couldn't simply move and took years to support intel macs natively if at all.

What if Apple came out with a new processor that needed new binaries? They could easily add support in their own tools, but, then all the applications built using Flash would have to wait for Adobe to support this new binary that future gadgets from Apple would need.

This line of reasoning is completely flawed. You are hypothesizing about what could possibly happen in the future (Adobe's tool becoming wildly popular) and comparing that event to what current exists; Apple's iPhone platform is wildly popular. The iPhone/iPad grasp on the market is already quite large and NOW Apple is trying to force all developers to use their tool.

The argument is not, "Use Apple's tool vs. Use Adobe's tool." The argument is, "Use Apple's tool vs. Use Any tool." IF Adobe were to become the head-and-shoulders above the rest, preferred platform AND they placed unreasonable restrictions on their product THEN they might be in the same situation.

I disagree with you completely. If Apple allowed Adobe, there would have been more developers not developers shifting to Adobe.

It like if Microsoft allowed only Visual Studio to develop in windows. (which is not the case) but still if you want to use new features people resort to visual studio.

You are painting very romantic future that every one will move to adobe.

I don't agree with this. It is Apple who is hurting innovation by controlling the developer tools. You can build with Flash on an open platform like Android. If you don't like Flash at least you have the option to use whatever you like. Apple doesn't allow that. Apple is such a control-freak company they don't even allow their own customers the ability to choose if they want Flash or not. Apple doesn't even allow you to change your own battery in your device, and you say that others are hurting innovation? Apple is brazenly attacking their own customers by going after Adobe. One of the main reasons people like to use Macs is because of creative ventures. They use Adobe apps for that. The Creative Suite is one of the most used tools, the apps are all integrated, and Apple is telling their own customers they can't use Flash? You call that open? BTW, implying that Adobe is paying off the government to go after Apple is irresponsible slander. If you have proof, post it, otherwise show your dignity and retract the implication.

Adobe Digital Editions users:

Add the file extension ACSM to the key LSRiskCategoryExtensions.

Here's an example:

	LSRiskCategorySafe

 LSRiskCategoryContentTypes

 public.html

 LSRiskCategoryExtensions

 ACSM

The quarantine bit is set for already downloaded files and you'll get the warning dialog for each file that you want to open. Of course, there is a way around this. Using the terminal is the quickest way to do this.

The following command removes the quarantine bit from the files:

<code>find . -name '*.phtml' -exec xattr -d com.apple.quarantine {} \;</code>

of course, you need to navigate to the directory holding those phtml files before you type this command. The backslash before the semi-colon at the end is important.

This works great on newly downloaded files but I have noticed specifically .phtml files I have downloaded before implementing the plist file still give the message, " may be a script application. It was downloaded from the internet..." etc.

All other file types I've tested are okay just .phtml

I used Safari 4 to download this file a few months back.

Any .phtml files downloaded after are fine and do not give the annoying message.

Any ideas as I have many files with this extension?

This is awesome thank you, just what I needed. It didn't work at first but shutting down Safari may have made it work. Or, I had been trying to open a pile of files all highlighted before created the new .plist file... not sure if unhighlighting and re-highlighting made it finally work, or if it was the restart of Safari. Happy it works now though. Surprised Apple doesn't have a setting for this under Security in System Preferences so weird.

It's a shame we have to work around but it's always great in the Mac world to know people are dedicated to helping people rather than make a buck... Worked great... Thanks for the post and the help.

Works like a charm !

As first it didn't work because I mistakenly put the plist file in Library/Preferences instead of Users/Username/Library/Preferences. After I moved it to the correct location it works and saves me countless clicks (opening HUNDREDS of php files today).

This "feature" of Leopard is SOOOOO annoying !

Thank you so much for sharing ! :)

I completely agree. I am really frustrated with Purolator at this point. I sent a package to Australia from Canada week before the deadline to mail my package. It takes only two days to mail something to Australia....

It took Purolator like 4 days to ACTUALLY mail out my package, and then 3 days to tell me that the package has an incorrect zip code.

It is now past the deadline and I know for sure that I provided the correct zip code... its not hard... its only FOUR NUMBERS.

So now, Im frustrated and will probably never use Purolator again.

Thank you. This "bug" have bothered me ever since it was introduced in 10.5.1. I can't understand why Apple have'nt included a 'safe file' option in System Preferences or something. So we can choose what files are safe or not.

anyone know... do wildcards work? Because, honestly, and i know this is not always a good policy, i would just add * if wildcards work... because i'm cautious about where i go, what i do, and i have antivirus anyways. They've already made it so no script can rm -rf /*, well not without prompting me for my password. So just by watching for password prompts... Apple, please make Quarantine FOAD.

Thank you very very much!

I've been so irritated that TextMate decided to implement this security "feature" introduced in Mac OS X Leopard, and refuses to open multiple php files at once even when I accept one of them.

Apple has definitely made a wrong decision here about executing "safe" content upon download and not showing the file extensions by default!

Thanks all, this site really help me out on how to get my touch to work with my airport extreme . I've had it about 7 months now and finally was able to figure it out. You think apple would have had this on there support page but I couldn't find it.

I'm sort of a newbie with php in general and on Leopard (10.5.7) in particular. Only got my Macbook Pro last month. If not for this post I would have still have been flailing away at windmills.

There seems to be a difference from the version of Leopard/php5 that you describe to what I have. The reference to the php5.conf file in /private/etc/apache2/other/ was nowhere to be found in my httpd.conf file. I had to add the include at the bottom of the includes myself. I then restarted apache, flushed the Safari buffer/cache, and finally I got <code></code> to work instead of just showing the source code.

My sincere thanks!

Thanks for the awesome fix!

For those that it didn't work, try restarting Safari. No idea if that is mandatory, but it's what I did and it works great.

Aren't you glad that the CRTC is there to protect the Canadian public from being exploited by monolithic telecommunications companies? I'm beginning to think that their only purpose is to ensure that Rogers keeps making profit at the expense of the public; take a careful look at their decisions, and you'll note than other telecomms and organizations such as CAIP seldom make any gains if it conflicts with the profit margins of Toronto-based video/cable/cell/VoIP providers.
